Physical Education Through the Ages Physical Education dates back to around 1820, their focus is on gymnastics, hygiene, and body development. PE was given by more than 400 colleges by 1950 majors. Colleges prioritized intramural sports and the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), which was established in 1851. Physical education was required in schools following the Civil War, but it wasn’t until 1970 that an amendment to the federal education act gave women equal rights in sports. It prepares them for lifelong health by teaching them movement skills, physical fitness, and sports engagement. Student assessment, qualified teachers, and interesting lessons are necessary for programs to be effective. As the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) gained popularity in the early 20th century, college athletics expanded.
